Cybersecurity incidents can interrupt sales, expose customer information and damage trust. Small businesses are often targeted because attackers expect weak passwords, outdated websites and limited monitoring. The most effective starting point is a disciplined set of basic controls.
Protect business email first
Email controls password resets, invoices and sensitive conversations. Enable multi-factor authentication, use unique passwords and remove accounts belonging to former staff. Configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC to reduce email impersonation.
Keep websites and systems updated
Apply security updates to content management systems, plugins, themes, servers and devices. Remove unused software and administrator accounts. Restrict file permissions and avoid installing unverified extensions.
Back up critical information
Maintain automated backups in a location separated from the live system. Test restoration periodically. A backup that has never been tested may fail during an emergency.
Reduce phishing risk

Prepare an incident response plan
Define who should be contacted, which systems should be isolated, how customers will be informed and how operations can continue. Preserve logs and evidence rather than immediately deleting everything.
Review security regularly
Cybersecurity is not a one-time installation. Schedule updates, access reviews, backup tests and staff refreshers. Basic controls applied consistently prevent many avoidable incidents.
